How do you calculate the gas cost of a trip?
Divide the distance by your car's miles per gallon to get the gallons you need, then multiply by the price per gallon. A 300-mile drive in a 30 mpg car uses 10 gallons; at this week's U.S. average of $4.48 for regular, that is about $44.78.
Which gas price does the calculator use?
The average for the state you choose, from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly survey (week of September 21, 2026). EIA surveys nine states on their own; for the rest the price is estimated from the regional average and the state's fuel tax, and the calculator says so. Type the price at your station for an exact figure.
How do I split gas money on a road trip?
Choose how many people are sharing the car. The calculator divides the fuel cost for the whole trip, round trip included if you tick it, equally between everyone.
Does it work for electric cars?
Yes. Pick an electric car and the calculator uses its EPA kWh per 100 miles and your state's average home electricity rate. Road trips often use public fast chargers, which usually cost more than charging at home, so enter the price per kWh you expect to pay.
